Dr. Sean X. Leng is a board-certified geriatrician and Professor of Medicine, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, and Health Policy and Management at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Born in China, Dr. Leng completed his initial medical training at Jiangxi Medical College, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.
In 1989, Dr. Leng emigrated to the United States, where he earned a PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from Texas A&M University. He subsequently completed a research fellowship in Immunology and Cytokine Biology at Yale University, a residency in Internal Medicine at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, and a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Since 2002, Dr. Leng has served as a full-time clinical and research faculty member in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins, holding joint appointments in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology and the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
In 2007, Dr. Leng was recognized as a Beeson Scholar in aging research. Over the years, he has built a robust translational aging research program focusing on aging immunity. His primary research areas include frailty, chronic inflammation, influenza immunization, and chronic cytomegalovirus infection in older adults. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
Dr. Leng’s work has been supported by a wide range of funding sources, including NIH K23/K76, R21, R01, R42, U01, U54, and Specialized Center of Research Excellence grants, as well as the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund and philanthropic contributions from organizations such as the Paul and Irma Milstein Foundation, the Charles Salisbury Family Foundation, and the Milstein Medical Asian American Partnership (MMAAP) Foundation. He has also developed significant collaborations with industry partners.
Dr. Leng has served on the NIH Aging Systems and Geriatrics study section, various Special Emphasis Panels, and editorial boards for prominent journals, including The Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and Immunity and Ageing. He is a senior fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and a member of the National Scientific Advisory Council of the American Federation for Aging Research.
A global leader in geriatric medicine, Dr. Leng has played a pivotal role in fostering international collaborations, particularly in China, where he has led efforts to establish a model academic geriatrics program at Peking Union Medical College Hospital since 2006. His expertise in bridging U.S.-China scholarly exchanges and building partnerships has advanced healthcare, biomedical research, and senior healthcare initiatives in both countries.
As President of the MMAAP Foundation since 2014, Dr. Leng continues to champion advancements in geriatric medicine and aging research worldwide.
